Henge article for WCCT

Title:  WCCT partner featured in NY Times

Henge, a local manufacturer of concrete ping-pong tables, was recently featured in a March 27 article in the New York Times.  The feature focused on the installation of a Henge T40 model in Tompkins Square Park in New York City.

The table was poured and finished in Alpena.hengetables.com

“The T40 is a beaut: a slab of polished concrete terrazzo with chips of glass embedded in its pale gray surface,” wrote Times reporter Ariel Kaminer.  “The net is a long prism shape made of powder-coated steel lattice.  Below that sits a base of modernist-sculptural complexity.”

Henge founder Alan Good described his community piece of art this way: “I’m offering it less as an object,” he said.  “It’s more about people who come by and just hang out, and watch each other.  It slows down passers-by.  It makes for a little lingering spot where you pause what you’re doing, linger, talk with a stranger.  The random rubbing of shoulders: that’s how I put my table forward.”

Alan Good and production manager Jeff Melin are working with the WCCT to ramp up production and refine their process.  True to their shared vision of sustainability and visual appeal, a mix design using recycled local glass is in the works.  Other innovative design concepts, such as lightweight or translucent concrete, are also on the table.
